Purplelink

Gridlink

Gridlink is a free daily sports grid. Each row and column is a clue, such as a team, a decade, an award or a famous teammate, and each cell needs a player who fits both. You get nine guesses and can use each player once. The rarer the player you name, the more points the cell is worth. The sport changes each day across the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL.

How to play

Each row and each column is a clue. Tap a cell, then name a player who fits both its row clue and its column clue. You have nine guesses in all, so a wrong name costs one.

When the grid is done, the cells you missed show two players who would have fit. Your rarity score adds up the points for each cell you filled.

Players come from lists we curated of well-known stars in each league, with team histories checked against Wikipedia and Wikidata. A player counts as a teammate when the two were on the same franchise in the same season; a team that moved or changed its name is one franchise. Baseball data comes from the Lahman Baseball Database, copyright 1996-2025 SABR, via Sean Lahman, used under CC BY-SA 3.0. We matched it to our own player list and combined it with other sources, so it is changed from the original.

Questions

How does scoring work?

You have nine guesses for nine cells. Every correct cell is worth 1 to 5 points: the less famous the player you name, the more it is worth. A wrong name uses a guess without scoring.

What do the clues mean?

A team clue means the player was on that franchise. A decade clue means the player was active in any season of that decade. Award clues are MVP winner, champion, five or more All-Star (or Pro Bowl) selections and Hall of Famer. A clue like Played with LeBron James means the player shared a team and a season with him. Position, career length and one-team clues are checked against the same list.

Can I use a player twice?

No. Each player can fill one cell.

Is there always an answer for every cell?

Yes. Every cell in every grid has at least two players in our list who fit it.

Where can I see the best possible grid?

In the section under the puzzle called This week's best grids. For every grid so far this week it shows a highest-scoring way to fill all nine cells with nine different players, how many players fit each cell, and how you did. Last week is kept in a drop-down. Today's appears once you finish today's puzzle, or tomorrow.

Which sport is it today?

The daily grid rotates through the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL. Practice mode lets you pick a sport and play unlimited grids.

Is there a rating or a leaderboard?

Yes. Each day you finish counts once toward a running Elo rating for this game, starting at 1000, and it is worked out by the rating service from your result and the difficulty of that day's puzzle. Without an account the rating stays on this device. Signed-in players can opt in to the all-time and weekly leaderboards under a display name.
