About this tool
A fast, private word and character counter. It updates as you type and never sends your text anywhere - all counting happens locally in your browser.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is your word count divided by 200 words per minute (a common average for silent reading), rounded up to the nearest minute. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a typical presentation pace.
Is my text stored?
No. The counter runs entirely in JavaScript on your device. Your text is never uploaded, sent over the network, logged, or saved.
Does it count LaTeX commands?
Yes. Any non-whitespace sequence counts as a word, so LaTeX commands like
\section or \textbf are counted as written. The tool does not strip markup, so counts reflect your raw source. How are words, sentences, and paragraphs counted?
Words are non-empty chunks separated by whitespace. Sentences are runs of text ending in
., !, or ?. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines. From the team behind these tools
