How to Compile a Multi-File LaTeX Project to PDF Online

Purplelink's LaTeX-to-PDF tool compiles .tex files and full multi-file projects in a browser, with no account and no local LaTeX installation. This guide covers packaging your project, choosing an engine, reading error output, and downloading the result.

Researchers and students who need a compiled PDF without a local LaTeX install or an Overleaf subscription can use Purplelink's free LaTeX-to-PDF tool. It handles single files and full projects with figures, bibliographies, and custom style files.

Steps

  1. Open purplelink.llc/tools/latex-to-pdf/. The upload area accepts a single .tex file (up to 5 MB) or a project .zip (up to 10 MB).

  2. For a single .tex file, drag it onto the upload area or click to choose it. The engine dropdown and Compile button become active once the file is selected.

  3. For a project with figures, a .bib file, or custom .sty/.cls files: zip the folder with main.tex at the root and include everything the document references. Overleaf's "Download as ZIP" produces exactly this layout. Upload the .zip instead of the .tex.

  4. Select an engine. pdfLaTeX works for most documents. Switch to XeLaTeX if your document uses fontspec, custom system fonts, or unicode-heavy text.

  5. Click Compile to PDF. A progress indicator appears while the server runs the build.

  6. If the compile fails, the error log appears with the first failure and its line number. Fix that error in your source, re-zip if necessary, and upload again.

  7. When the build succeeds, the PDF renders inline. Click Download to save it.

What's happening under the hood

Your upload lands in an ephemeral container created for that request. The tool runs latexmk with your chosen engine, which handles the multi-pass build automatically. The sequence: a first LaTeX pass to produce auxiliary files with cross-references, a BibTeX or Biber pass if a .bib file is present, then one or two more passes to resolve all citations and labels. Once done, the compiled PDF streams back to your browser and the container is discarded. Nothing is written to durable storage or logged. LuaLaTeX is not available; documents that depend on it will need a local LaTeX installation.

Q&A

My figure paths use subdirectories, like figures/fig1.pdf. Does that work?

Yes. Keep the same directory structure inside the zip and paths resolve as expected during compilation.

Can I include custom .cls or .sty files?

Yes. Place them in the zip at the path your .tex expects. If they call packages not in the tool's TeX Live distribution, you'll see a "missing package" error in the log.

The build succeeded but citations show as [?].

The .bib file was probably not included in the zip. Add it at the root or the path your \bibliography command references, then recompile.
