How to Format a Citation from a DOI or arXiv ID

Researchers use Purplelink's free Citation Generator to turn a DOI, arXiv ID, or ISBN into a formatted APA, MLA, Chicago, or IEEE citation in seconds.

Researchers preparing a manuscript bibliography use the Citation Generator to convert a DOI, arXiv ID, or ISBN into a formatted citation without opening a reference manager. The tool fetches metadata from public databases and formats the result in the browser, so no account is needed.

Steps

  1. Go to purplelink.llc/tools/citation-generator/. The page opens with an identifier input field and format tabs for APA, MLA, Chicago, and IEEE.

  2. Paste your identifier into the field: a DOI (like 10.1145/3290605.3300307), an arXiv ID (like 2303.08774), or an ISBN. Full doi.org and arxiv.org URLs also work; the tool extracts the identifier automatically.

  3. Click Generate or press Enter. The tool fetches metadata from Crossref, the arXiv API, or Open Library and renders the formatted citation. Results appear in about one second.

  4. Click the tab for the style your submission requires: APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago author-date, or IEEE. The citation reformats without a second lookup.

  5. Click Copy. Paste the citation into your document.

  6. Proofread before using. Author names with diacritics sometimes encode incorrectly in source database records. Verify the year, volume, and page range against the actual paper. Metadata from Crossref and Open Library is usually accurate but not guaranteed.

  7. If the identifier does not resolve, use the manual entry form below the input field. arXiv ID lookups can fail on institutional networks that restrict browser-to-arXiv requests. The formatted output from manual entry is identical to an auto-resolved lookup.

What's happening under the hood

DOI lookups resolve through Crossref, which indexes over 100 million published items. arXiv IDs query the arXiv API directly from your browser. ISBNs use the Open Library API. All three requests run client-side; nothing you enter reaches Purplelink's servers. Formatting applies the field-mapping rules for each style: author ordering, year placement, title capitalization, and container name conventions. The entire operation runs in the page's JavaScript with no server call after the metadata arrives.

Q&A

The author names are in the wrong order.

Crossref records occasionally have author order errors. Check the paper's title page and edit the citation by hand.

I only have a URL, not a DOI.

Paste the doi.org URL directly; the tool extracts the DOI. For a paper with no DOI or arXiv ID, use the manual entry form and fill in what you have.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Nothing is stored and no login is required.
