Miyajima and Hiroshima

The great torii of Itsukushima Shrine stands in the sea at high tide and on wet sand at low tide. Hiroshima is a short ferry and train ride away.

The current torii at Itsukushima dates from 1875 and stands about 16 metres high; it is not fixed to the seabed but held by its own weight.

The floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine is framed between the shrine's red pavilions under a moody dusk sky.
