Zermatt and the Matterhorn

The Gornergrat railway climbs to 3,089 metres above Zermatt. From Rotenboden a short path leads to Riffelsee, where the Matterhorn reflects on a still morning, and the Gorner glacier fills the valley below.

The Matterhorn is 4,478 metres high; the Gornergrat railway, opened in 1898, was Switzerland's first electric cog railway.

The Matterhorn's snow-covered peak is mirrored in the still waters of Riffelsee lake beneath a partly cloudy sky.
