AAAI reference format
AAAI-27 papers use the AAAI-27 author kit. aaai2027.sty sets the bibliography style to aaai2027.bst for you, and the submission allows 7 pages of content plus up to 2 pages reserved for references.
Checked against the sources linked at the end of this page.
What AAAI expects
- Reference style: Author-year through natbib, formatted by
aaai2027.bst. - Style file:
\usepackage[submission]{aaai2027}on\documentclass[letterpaper]{article}for the anonymous submission. - Length: The main submission PDF can have up to 9 pages, with pages 8 and 9 reserved for references. That leaves up to 7 pages of other content.
- Paper: US Letter, two-column AAAI style, Type 1 or TrueType fonts.
- Review: Double-blind. Remove author and affiliation information, and leave out acknowledgements.
Setting up the bibliography
The kit's instructions say the style file already sets the bibliography style, so you do not add a \bibliographystyle command. In the preamble and at the end of the document:
\usepackage[submission]{aaai2027}
\usepackage{natbib}
...
\bibliography{refs}
The template marks the natbib line “do not change this and do not add any options to it”. Keep aaai2027.bst next to your .tex file.

Three AAAI papers, produced by running aaai2027.bst over a .bib file built from the Crossref record for each DOI. The style does not print DOIs; the link is added here for checking. Titles, authors, volumes and pages were checked against Crossref on 2026-10-01.

The official kit is the AAAI-27 Author Kit, a zip with aaai2027.sty, aaai2027.bst, an anonymous submission template, a camera-ready template and the reproducibility checklist.
Common mistakes
- Adding your own
\bibliographystyleline or natbib options. The kit says not to. - Letting other content run onto page 8. Pages 8 and 9 are for references only.
- Separating authors with commas in a hand-edited list. AAAI style uses semicolons, as the entries above show.
- Leaving acknowledgements in the review version.
Check your .bib file
- BibTeX Validator (free) checks a .bib file for syntax errors and missing required fields.
- Citation Generator (free) builds IEEE, APA, MLA and Chicago citations from entry fields, in your browser.
- Reference Converter (free) converts between BibTeX, RIS and EndNote. The same converter is below.
- Paper Review with the Journal Pack checks a manuscript against the submission rules of 25 venues, AAAI among them.
