ACL reference format

ACL venues and ACL Rolling Review use the official ACL style files: acl.sty with acl_natbib.bst. References must carry a DOI where one exists, or an ACL Anthology link as second choice.

Checked against the sources linked at the end of this page.

What ACL expects

Setting up the bibliography

With the ACL style file you do not write a \bibliographystyle line. At the end of the document:

\documentclass[11pt]{article}
\usepackage[review]{acl}
...
\bibliography{custom}

Keep acl_natbib.bst next to your .tex file. The kit also includes anthology.bib, the bibliography for the ACL Anthology.

Three references in acl_natbib.bst

  1. Emily M. Bender and Alexander Koller. 2020. Climbing towards NLU: On meaning, form, and understanding in the age of data. Three ACL 2020 papers, produced by running acl_natbib.bst over a .bib file built from the Crossref record for each DOI. In the PDF the style turns the title into the DOI link; the link is written out here. Titles, authors, volumes and pages were checked against Crossref on 2026-10-01.

LaTeX template

The official kit is the acl-org/acl-style-files repository, also available as an Overleaf template linked from its README. Its README says authors may not modify the style files or use templates designed for other conferences.

Check your .bib file

Your references never leave your browser. There is no upload and nothing is stored.

Frequently asked

What bibliography style does ACL use?

acl_natbib.bst, from the official ACL style files. The acl.sty file sets it, so the document needs only a \bibliography line.

Do references count toward the ACL page limit?

No. Long papers have 8 pages of content and short papers 4 in review, plus unlimited pages for references.

Does ACL require DOIs in references?

Yes. The formatting guidelines require DOIs for all cited works when possible, or links to ACL Anthology pages as a second resort.
