JAIS reference format
JAIS requires APA 7th edition for all references. Manuscripts are double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman and reviewed double-blind.
Checked against the sources linked at the end of this page.
What JAIS expects
- Reference style: APA, 7th edition. Section 6 of the JAIS Submission Style Guide has in-text and reference examples.
- Manuscript format: Double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. The author page names no LaTeX class or .bst file.
- Length: Research articles over 15,000 words are likely to get extra scrutiny and may be returned to be shortened. Manuscripts over 65 pages, including everything, are not sent for review.
- Review: Double-blind. Author names should not appear in any obvious way, and references should not reveal identity.
Setting up the bibliography
JAIS does not publish a BibTeX style. If you draft in LaTeX, one way to get APA 7 references is biblatex with the apa style and Biber:
\usepackage[style=apa, backend=biber]{biblatex}
\addbibresource{refs.bib}
...
\printbibliography
This setup is the one our APA 7 template page uses. It is our suggestion, not a JAIS instruction, and the submitted manuscript still has to meet the JAIS formatting rules above.

Formatted by hand in APA 7. Author initials follow the Crossref record for each DOI. Titles, authors, volumes and pages were checked against Crossref on 2026-10-01.
LaTeX template
The JAIS author page does not offer a LaTeX template. For an APA 7 manuscript skeleton in LaTeX, see our APA 7 (apa7) template, and check the result against the JAIS Submission Style Guide before you submit.
Common mistakes
- Formatting from memory of another journal. JAIS names APA 7th edition, and Section 6 of its Submission Style Guide has the reference examples to copy.
- Counting pages without the references. The 65-page limit covers everything in the file.
- Self-citations that identify you. The author page asks that references not reveal the authors' identity.
Check your .bib file
- BibTeX Validator (free) checks a .bib file for syntax errors and missing required fields.
- Citation Generator (free) builds IEEE, APA, MLA and Chicago citations from entry fields, in your browser.
- Reference Converter (free) converts between BibTeX, RIS and EndNote. The same converter is below.
Converted output
Your references never leave your browser. There is no upload and nothing is stored.
